NFL draft rumors: Could Steelers draft Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders?

Could the Pittsburgh Steelers be targeting Shedeur Sanders as their future franchise quarterback?

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers plan to host the Colorado product for a top-30 visit on Thursday. As the name suggests, the invite is one of 30 official visits that Pittsburgh is allowed ahead of the draft, though it doesn’t necessarily suggest a player is within the top 30 of a team’s big board.

Throughout the 2024 season and 2025 pre-draft process, Miami (Fla.) quarterback Cam Ward established himself as the consensus top quarterback prospect in the 2025 NFL draft class. Sanders is right behind him according to most analysts’ quarterback rankings.

The Steelers currently have two quarterbacks on their roster: Mason Rudolph, who returns to Pittsburgh on a two-year deal in free agency, and Skylar Thompson, who the team signed to a reserve/future contract in January.

Pittsburgh also has been connected to free-agent veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In late March, the former Jet spent ‘about six hours’ at the Steelers’ training facility, according to ESPN. However, Rodgers remains a free agent, and there hasn’t been any news of a contract looming.

The Steelers currently own the No. 21 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft and are third among betting favorites to draft Sanders behind the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Pittsburgh holds +600 odds to select the Colorado quarterback.
